Qatar enjoys many touristic attractions that make it a favorite destination for many visitors. Striving to become the new sports center in the world, Qatar won the FIFA World Cup bid for the football championship that will be held in 2022, thus becoming the first Arab country in the Middle East to host this big event.
Moreover, Qatar has succeeded in organizing and hosting various international and regional tournaments, including the Asian Games in 2006, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup in 2011, and the world championships of Handball, Boxing, and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics’ sports in 2015, as well as AFC U-23 championship in 2016.
Qatar’s agenda for the world sports’ championships is further expanding, thanks to the continuous efforts of Qatar Olympic Committee, and the various sports’ unions in Qatar.
In addition to the old heritage sports that reflect Qatar’s cultural identity including the traditional boat racing, camel racing, horse racing, and falconry (falcon hunting), the modern sports have also witnessed a great progress and several achievements in the last decades.
While football is considered the most popular sport in Qatar, tennis is also gaining a growing popularity, especially with the opening of the tennis complex that includes several tennis courts and other state-of-the-art establishments that have partially helped Qatar in hosting several international sports’ events.

Believing in the importance of sports and its significant role in one’s health and well-being, the Emiri Resolution was issued in 2011, designating the second Tuesday of February of each year as the Sports Day for the State and the official holiday dedicated for playing sports, which makes Qatar one of the leading few countries adopting this approach.
